Saturday - Of course we had to go back to Best Buy this morning. They gave Joe the wrong size cover for his phone, so that was the first thing on the agenda. Joy took Dixie and Jim to the Farmer's Market in Gresham, and Dixie texted us that they were having breakfast, just 1/2 mile from us as we left Best Buy. So we joined them, then drove back to Joys. Joy and Rich got busy with yard work, mulching, etc. It makes one tired to watch them!
Dixie worked on one of her flower beds, but after they got out of her way, she got heavy into shoveling.
Meanwhile, back on the patio . . .
Rachel, Collins and Marilyn joined us at Joys, and eventually we played cards until the 2 old guys could no longer sit still. Then Joe and I came back to RV to get cleaned up for dinner -- we were going out to celebrate Collins' 75th birthday, which is tomorrow. We had a very nice dinner at Bumpers in Gresham.
Then we reconvened at Joy's to finish the celebration, with cards and a present . . .
(logs from Rich's trees for the logging truck that Collins had built) (I asked if that was one step up from a lump of coal, but he had actually picked these out from Rich's woodpile last month when we stopped by here)
and cake . . .
We were all glad to get to celebrate with him.
Before it got completely dark, it took a picture of one of the trees in their yard -- it is somewhere between 80 and 100 foot tall, a beautiful Douglas fir. They have several really nice trees in their yard. We don't have trees like this in Arizona.
By the time we got done partying, it was time to leave to make curfew. Collins and Marilyn are heading out tomorrow for their appointment for their Winnebago, so we won't catch up with them again until we all get back in Arizona. We wish them safe travels.

8/18/2017 - A Shopping Day
Friday - Well, today's adventure was shopping for Joe a new cell phone. He received an e-mail ad from Best Buy this morning that they were offering the Samsung 8plus for $300 off, and he's been suffering through with his phone for a while now, so he found the address for the closest Best Buy and off we went. We stopped at the General Mercantile down the road for sodas (our first time in that store), and they had pretty neat table and chairs in their deli area.
Buying a new phone is always an ordeal, and this wasn't any different, but Joe did end up with the new Samsung 8plus. After he had made his decision, I wandered over to a craft store on the same parking lot and shopped there, then came back and checked on him. Then I went back and shopped two more stores, and then sat in the car. He came out to the car to get something so he drug me back in to help finish all the details. It was about a 3-hour process, but finally we finished, grabbed some lunch, and headed over to Joy's.
There's a store at the corner down from Joy's that I had wanted to stop at all week, and Dixie wanted to go back to, so she and I went there, to Terra Casa, mostly a decor/pottery place, but they had some neat things. I was especially interested in some hot air balloons I could see as we drove past, so I checked them out.
But as soon as I checked the price and saw where they were made, I knew I couldn't buy them. Not only were they too expensive, they were made in Viet Nam. Joe doesn't let me buy things made in Viet Nam.
They were pretty heavy so I'm not sure I could have made them work anyhow. But the store had some neat things in it.
We got back to Joys and started dinner. Marilyn had made enchalidas, so we added some more side dishes and had a great meal out on the patio again. Played a few hands of cards, then left before curfew. Our time here is getting short, but we've had a great visit and gotten to see some lovely parts of Oregon. Joe is engrossed in his new phone, so that's it for today.

8/17/2017 - Clackamas River Trail
Thursday -We moseyed over to Joy’s about 11:00, and found
Joy and Dixie out surveying the property.
Rich has quite an inventory of firewood, in the woodshed, in front of
the woodshed, and along the driveway.
They burn wood all winter, so they shouldn’t get cold for several years.
Another project they have started (last year) is wood steps
and flower boxes from this driveway up to the house. It is still a work in progress.
We all wanted to see the work that Collins and Rich had done
last night on the shed, so we walked over there. We need this building at our house to park the motorhome under.
And I finally got back to the garden, which is flourishing,
to take some pictures. Joe picked 3
tomatoes today and brought them back to our RV.
Joy and Marilyn picked a batch of green beans last night.
Dixie had some papers for Joe and her to sign, so we had to
hunt up a notary. On that parking lot of Fred Meyers,
we spotted the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile.
We’ve seen this on the road a few times over the years but never parked
in a parking lot.
We decided on a scenic drive that Joy had recommended, on
Hwy 224 along the Clackamas River from Estacada to Ripplebrook. This is part of the West Cascades Scenic Byway. We stopped for lunch at the Cazadero Inn in Estacada, where a
mural on the building across the parking lot greeted us. This was basically the last place to eat
before we got on our scenic drive, but it was very nice, with table views
overlooking the pretty Clackamas River.
And the food was good, too. Plus,
they had a few slot machines in the bar area, and I won about $35.
(the green in the middle of the photo is the river)
We stopped at a few pull-offs, and drove down into some of
the campgrounds. The river just bubbled
along, sometimes rippling over boulders and rocks, sometimes very smooth. Part of this drive took us into the Mt. Hood National Forest.
We even got a scenic shot of us.
The water was green-colored, but very clear.
We stopped at one area where there was a raft launch. We’ve never seen one of these before. It would be fun to watch them launch a raft
off of this, but it looked like they would hit a boulder at the bottom. We wondered if the river is a bit low.
And across the road from the river, we saw a little
waterfall right by the highway.
We turned around at Ripplebrook and went in the Camp Store,
where I found eclipse sunglasses.
Everywhere else I’ve asked today has either sold out or never had them,
so we were happy to have finally found some since we are in the pretty direct
path of the eclipse. We had seen the
sunglasses in Prineville last month but were not smart enough to buy them then. As we got back to Estacada, we decided to
stop for ice cream in the same strip our lunch restaurant was in, so we sat outside and enjoyed our little treat. It was another lovely day here.
Jim mentioned that the pub they go to has $10 fillets on
Thursdays, so after we reconnected with Joy, we all went to the pub and had our
steaks. Rich was busy with his wood, he
had a buddy come by to help him, so he didn’t go with us. When we got back to Joy’s, Rich finished up
his work and joined us to play 6-handed euchre.
We sat outside on the back patio, I took this picture about 8:50 p.m.
About 15 minutes later, Joe remembered that we had a curfew,
so we finished up our game (girls 1, guys 2), and headed back to camp. We got to the entrance about 20 minutes
before 10:00, but they were already checking tags so we were cutting it a
little close.
We all really enjoyed the day. It was fun spending time with Dixie and Jim
again, and the drive was just the kind we love.
We spotted Mt. Hood a couple of times, the weather was perfect, and we
didn’t even get locked out of our campground (in which case we would have had to park outside the gate and walk in to our camper, or get Collins or Marilyn out of bed to come get us) – all ended good.

8/16/2017 - Day off
Wednesday - We've had pretty busy days over here by Joy's so today we took it easy. Marilyn cooked, but I didn't do much. Joe and I left the campground about 11:00 and drove south to Camping World for a part for the awning. We got back and Joe and Collins worked on their awning and ours, and I took a nap. I did call around to get campground reservations for next week when we leave here on Tuesday.
Eventually, we headed over to Joy and Rich's, Collins helped Rich build a shed, Marilyn took a salad and 2 lemon pies over for dinner, Joy cooked sloppy joes, and we had a nice afternoon/evening visiting and playing cards. Rachel had driven up from Salem again. No pictures today, so an easy blog tonight. We left Joys about 9:00 to make curfew, and that was the end of our non-busy day.
